Refrigerator ephemera: thinking historically about my own clutter
Dear Readers, It's been a while since I've been active on this blog, but a course has challenged me to write a social media post about 'banal things' in material culture. I'm responding by offering up as an example the materials affixed to my refrigerator. This post is inspired by an article on children's artworks that I read from The Atlantic which made me think of the children's drawing I have on my fridge. The article was pretty harsh about children's art, arguing that keeping it out of nostalgia was unnecessary. The best way to appreciate children's art, she wrote, was to celebrate it in the moment and then throw it away. The article got me wondering whether I would feel the same way about the coverings on my fridge if I ever spent the time to think about them. Would I want to chuck them in the bin too?
